Zero fighter

Went to bedok jetty straight after work to catch the tide today, bait fish were present, caught one juvenile threadfin on the tamban hook. The jetty was very crowded today, managed to squeeze into a small spot within a big family. The regular pack of hairtails were missing today, only saw one guy at the far corner land a single hairtail. I only set 1 rod for hairtail today, couldn’t squeeze a second rod. One member of the family i was sharing the area with caught a big garfish. Called it quits after 30mins. I don’t really like fishing on weekends :\

New toys!

Bought some micro jigs, hooks and a crankbait. My guilty pleasure. Hope i can go fishing soon!

Belt/cutlass/hairtail veteran?

Went fishing the other day with 2 other kaki, pretty much figured out the baitfish pattern, 2 hours before the high tide. They will be more abundant after a rain too. Got my first take pretty quick but got cut off. After that I caught 2 hairtails, one of which was huge, okay maybe not that big but was a record for me. Marc caught another one and yw was empty handed, he did get a few takes but failed to set the hook or got cut off.

Beltfish again!

Once again at my favorite spot on bedok jetty, caught 1 belt fish on a large tuabak(Bigeye Ilisha). Had several cut lines as i waited too long to reel in the fish, though it was a gar :\

New pliers came in handy to remove to hook, but the fish still jumped quite a lot, made me jump too.

Look at those teeth!! you wouldn’t want to get bit!

Lost some gain some

Went fishing at bedok jetty with some 1st timers, got them addicted to fishing. Tambans were again very plentiful. Managed to hook up a huge garfish, exhilarating, managed to peel my drag easily. However my line broke while i was lifting it out of the water due to some damage when it swam under the jetty and the line frayed against the jetty pillars. It was my biggest garfish yet. Then managed to land 2 beltfish, my first time catching them. Not strong fighters, they tend to take the bait and tuck in straight away unlike gars. released 1 for good karma and gave away the other as it was gut hooked. Also bought new pliers to avoid those pesky garfish and beltfish teeth, would significantly reduce the time it take to remove and release the fishes.

6pipe goodness

Went to my favorite garfish(todak/houndfish/needlefish) spot, aka 6pipe at east coast park straight after my final exam paper.

The i timed my arrival to 2hrs before the full high tide, that’s usually when the baitfish(tamban) come in schools.

The baitfish here are all juveniles, bite sized for garfish. They were abundant, occasionally i would bring a full string , 6 or 7, on the sabiki rig at a time.

Spotted the first gar at the full tide, luckily i was rigged up, threw my bait near the area and left my spool open. Within minutes it was snagged up by a greedy fish, i waited for the fish to swallow the bait before reeling it back. There is no need to set the hook on these guys, their mouth are long hard beaks with rows of teeth(don’t get bitten, sure to bleed). I left my drag a little loose on purpose, the fish made a few short runs and leaps out of the water,¬†exhilarating, but it was all over within 30seconds. Subsequently we had multiple takes, but these gars are tricky fish, they intentionally bite onto the fish and make long runs and multiple leaps, and just when you thought you had them hooked, they release the baitfish. Quite frustrating, it kills the baitfish and you have to change to another live baitfish. Within 2hrs we ran out of bait, many suffocated in our small pail(we did our best by changing the water constantly, gave us rope burns), some died instantly after being hooked, and others got killed by gars. Then we were left with 1 dead bait on the end of the line, so i asked my friend to just cast anyway, see if there’s any desperate fish that take dead baits. While we were packing up and taking pictures, my friend noticed that there was very little line left on his spool, and his float was missing. He reeled in, he felt only a slight resistance, probably because he set his drag too high. It’s another gar, and it’s bigger than the one i caught!!! Brings our total bounty to 2. We packed up and left after that, ¬†well worth the sunburn.

And no gar in sight

There seems to be very little gars lately… manage to catch some bait fish, and even a small mackerel on the tamban jig
